Child benefit: can you qualify for a free boiler and underfloor insulation?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme helps low-income and vulnerable families get their boiler installed and underfloor insulated for free or at a fraction of the cost. A government-backed boiler scheme, also known as ECO3, can help families living in fuel poverty receive the funding for energy-saving measures to get installed.

Can I qualify for the ECO underfloor insulation?

If there is a gap under your floors, it is called suspended floors. Suspended floors let in cold, damp air and dust from the void below. This creates draughts, uneven temperatures, condensation and mould.

If you have a basement/cellar that is not insulated, it is usually a damp and cold place in the house, which can drag the heat down from other house floors and make your home very inefficient.

You could benefit from increased energy efficiency and lower energy bills if you have the underfloor or basement ceiling insulated.

Can I get a free boiler if I receive child benefit?

If you receive child benefit and own your home, you might be eligible for a boiler and underfloor insulation grant. However, child benefit is the only benefit that has an income cap. To qualify, your income has to be below the cap.

To be eligible for the funding, you also have to have a boiler in the property that is older than six years. In most cases, your boiler will be free, especially if you get the underfloor insulated. However, in some cases, a contribution might be required.

The funding is calculated based on the type of property you own and not the benefits you receive. Therefore, we would need to carry out free no-obligation to identify if you could get a free boiler or you would need to contribute.

What if I don’t have a boiler or radiators in the property?

If your property has access to gas mains and is heated in the following way:

  • Electric panel heaters

  • Electric plug-in radiators

  • Gas fire (no boiler or radiators)

  • No Heating at all

You might be eligible for what is called a First-time central heating grant that allows a boiler and radiator to be installed in your property. However, you must have a gas meter in your house.

If you think you meet the criteria, please visit our dedicated page and apply today.
